Tub-to-shower conversions and walk-in showers

A common request is simple: take out the tub nobody climbs into anymore and put in a shower you can step straight into. The old tub footprint becomes the shower, often with a glass panel, a niche or bench, and a handheld head on a slide bar. If it’s the only tub in the house and small children bathe there, keeping one tub elsewhere may matter more than the floor space.

Curbless showers

A curbless shower has no step at the entry, so the shower floor has to be set lower than the room and sloped to the drain, often a linear drain along the back or entry. On a concrete slab, that often means cutting out and re-pouring part of the slab; on a pier-and-beam floor the framing is lowered instead. We look at the foundation during the walkthrough so the likely slab or framing work is written into the estimate rather than left as a surprise.

Ceramic tiles being installed

Tile surrounds and waterproofing

Grout soaks up water, and tile alone does not keep a wall dry. What protects the framing is the layer you never see: a sheet or liquid-applied membrane over the backer board, tied into a shower pan sloped to the drain. Corners, niches, benches and the valve opening are where leaks tend to start, so they get the closest attention.

Then come the visible choices: tile size and pattern, grout color and where the cuts land. Large-format tile means fewer grout lines but needs a flatter wall; small mosaic tile on a shower floor gives more grip.

Vanities, storage and ventilation

Drawers keep hair tools and supplies easier to reach than a deep cabinet, a taller vanity is kinder to your back, and a double sink only helps if two people can stand there at once. A medicine cabinet recessed between studs adds storage without using floor space.

Ventilation is the piece people skip and regret. A bath fan should be sized for the room and ducted outside, not into the attic, where the moisture soaks insulation and roof decking. Plumbing and electrical scope, including fan wiring, outlets and lighting, is planned into the estimate and carried out by trades holding the Texas licenses that work requires.

Aging-in-place features

Many homeowners remodel so they can stay in the house for decades, or so a parent can visit without worry. Plan these in while the studs and subfloor are exposed:

  • Grab bars at the shower and toilet, anchored to solid wood blocking inside the wall. Blocking can go in now even if the bars come later.
  • Wider doorways where framing allows, or a pocket door that frees up room in a small bath.
  • Low or no thresholds between the hall, the bathroom floor and the shower.
  • A shower bench, a handheld head reachable from the seat, and lever handles instead of knobs.

If someone in the household has a specific need, tell us early. A layout is easier to plan around a real person than a checklist.

How a bathroom project runs

  1. First conversation and walkthrough. Photos and rough measurements get us started; at the house we check the floor structure, plumbing access and layout options.
  2. Written scope and estimate. A description of the work, including what is and isn’t covered, so you can compare bids line by line.
  3. Selections and ordering. Tile, fixtures, vanity, glass and fan are chosen and ordered. Our policy: no cancellations after materials have been purchased.
  4. Permit. Where the city requires one, your project’s permit is applied for before work starts.
  5. Demolition and rough-in. Old finishes come out; plumbing, electrical and framing changes go in and are inspected before anything is closed up.
  6. Waterproofing, tile, fixtures and final walkthrough. Then we test every fixture together and list any touch-ups before calling the bath done.

Duration depends on scope, selection lead times, inspection scheduling and what turns up under the old tile.

La Vernia permits for bathroom remodels

Inside the city limits, the City of La Vernia defines a remodel as construction work on the main structure such as moving walls, replacing windows or major electrical, plumbing or mechanical work. A bathroom that gets relocated plumbing, new circuits or a reframed wall can fall under that definition.

The city’s remodel packet asks for a residential permit application, plans showing electrical, mechanical and plumbing work where applicable, and contractor registration for those trades. The city’s outside reviewer, Bureau Veritas, checks the plumbing and wiring rough-in while the walls are still open and signs off with a final inspection. Plan the schedule so work starts within 180 days of issue and keeps moving, or the permit can lapse.

Fees vary by project; confirm them with La Vernia City Hall at 102 E. Chihuahua Street. We check with the city whether a cosmetic-only refresh needs a permit. Homes outside the city limits follow different rules; see our La Vernia and Wilson County permits guide.

Scheduling a guest bath before the holidays

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. Whether a guest bath can be ready by then depends on scope: a new vanity, faucet, mirror, light and paint involve far fewer steps than a tear-out with a new shower, waterproofing and inspections. Tile and glass lead times, permit review and our schedule when you call all play a part, so reach out early, decide on materials quickly and keep a backup plan. Our guide to finishing a remodel before the holidays covers the timing questions.

Related work and nearby towns. Bathroom work often pairs with kitchen remodeling, home repairs like subfloor damage from an old leak, or a home addition with a second bath. Bathroom remodeling questions

Can a tub be replaced with a walk-in shower?

Usually, yes. The tub space becomes the shower, and the drain, valve and walls are rebuilt for it. Decide first whether you want a tub elsewhere in the house and how low the entry should be.

Does a bathroom remodel in La Vernia need a permit?

Inside city limits, the City of La Vernia counts major plumbing, electrical or mechanical work and moving walls as a remodel, which goes through a permit, plan review and inspections. Cosmetic-only work should be confirmed with City Hall.

Can you make a bathroom easier to use as we get older?

Yes. Common changes are grab bars backed by wall blocking, a low or curbless shower entry, a bench with a handheld shower, wider doorways and lever handles.

Can a guest bathroom be finished before Thanksgiving?

It depends on scope, material lead times, any permit and inspection steps and our schedule when you call. A refresh has a better chance than a full rebuild, and we discuss what is realistic during the estimate.
